“A ‘Borg and a Baritone”: ‘Prologue’

On Sunday November 18th, I am going to Silverton, Ohio – a few minutes north of Cincinnati – for Cincinnati Tradition’s “Opening Night”. Cincinnati Tradition is an all-age Drum & Bugle Corps that competes on the Drum Corps Associates (DCA) circuit; “Opening Night” is their tryout night. I haven’t made up my mind on which instrument I’m trying out for: the Baritone or its larger cousin, the Euphonium. Since both are in the same key, with the same fingerings (the Euphonium feels like it has a larger over range), it’s a matter of if I want to play the larger instrument.

I have the Audition Packet, a shopping list of things I need to buy, and a plan for getting in some semblance of “marching shape” (upper body work, you’re on the clock!).

“A ‘Borg and a Baritone” will be where I chronicle my journey through this latest chance at marching Drum and Bugle Corps; if I don’t make Tradition, this will be a short segment. 😉 Otherwise, the plan is to write once or twice a month, during the ‘Winter Season’ (December through February), 2-3 times a month, during ‘Spring Training’ (March through mid-May), and at least once a week during the Competition and Performance part of the season (mid-May through Labor Day weekend). Wish me luck and I hope you journey with me to “Opening Night” and hopefully the DCA World Championships with the Cincinnati Tradition!
