Spooky Movie Month, Pt. 4: October 22-31

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

The last batch of movies, with minimal spoilers:

October 22nd: a) “Angels Fallen” (2020). Gabriel – THAT Gabriel – and Michael – THAT Michael – reunite their demon-hunting team to take a trip to Europe to find… something. I could not tell you what that was, as I could not finish this movie; I stopped watching after about 20 minutes. The acting is absolutely ATROCIOUS. Like, “High School Film Project” bad. I might try to watch it again in November but…. yeesh.
b) “Splinter” (2008). This was a needed pallet-cleanser. Mysterious wood-like splinters grow out of organisms, turning them into murderous zombies. Not a bad movie.

October 23rd:

October 24th: “The Call” (2020). This was the arguably the best movie of Part 3! A serial killer somehow manages to connect a woman in 1990s South Korea with a woman in 2010s South Korea, living in the same house. In Korean with subtitles. There is some serious timeline-jumping, especially in the last 20 minutes. Also, pay attention to who is doing what; there are some twists and turns.

October 25th: “Garfield’s Halloween Adventure” (1985).Not a movie, I try to watch this 20-minute cartoon every October. It details Garfield and Odie, and their trick-or-treating adventure on Halloween night, from stealing Jon’s lunch to picking out a costume to ghost pirates.

October 26th:

October 27th: “The Masque of the Red Death” (1964). One of the ‘classics’ of early Horror movies, this is a retelling of Edgar Allen Poe’s story of the same name. Vincent Price – as creepy as ever – throws a part for the nobles of his territory, while The Red Death ravages the peasant folk. It’s not ‘scary’, per se, but it was as good as advertised.

October 28th: “Talk To Me” (2022). This is a more recent movie that I finally got to watch. It was pretty good! A group of teenagers use a withered hand (!) to talk to ghosts and spirits… until one of them gets seriously injured by “something”.

October 29th: “Weapons” (2025). That was a messed up, 2-hour ride through some dark back roads of Horror movies! The movie is broken down into 6 pieces, presented non-linearly, so have to pay attention to who’s doing and saying what. I did not expect the twist on the main plot. Exceeded the hype!!

October 30th: ‘Welcome to Derry’, Episode 1 (2025). A town kid disappears. 5 other kids investigate. Absolute evil insanity commences. Slight spoiler warning: do not get attached to characters – there’s a good chance that they don’t make it to episode 2.

October 31st: a) ‘Welcome to Derry’, Episode 2 (2025). See the above description, except swap “there’s a good chance that they don’t make it to episode 2” with “there’s a good chance that they wished they hadn’t made it to episode 2”.
b) Ghost to Ghost AM – this has been a tradition for over 20 years. Coast to Coast AM with Art Bell is a nightly 4-hour talk show (no longer hosted by Art Bell) that focuses on the paranormal, UFOs, angels and demons, folklore, and the unexplained. I first found Coast to Coast AM in 1997, my first semester at Purdue University. Fast forward to 2004 or 2005. I then heard Ghost to Ghost AM; on Halloween night, Art Bell would take calls from people telling ghost stories – true or fiction – with Bell sprinkling in a story or 2, himself. Since Art Bell’s retirement, George Noory has handled the duties (mainly), although the calls-portion has shrunk to 2 hours. Each Halloween night, I would either stay awake and listen, or record the broadcast, edit out hours of ads and commercials, send the file to my brothers and sister, and listen to it the next day (or two). This year, I did the recording-editing-listening path. The stories were… meh. A few spooky ones but overall, not that great.

This was one of the most enjoyable “Spooky Movie Months” that I done (this was the 6th one). Ranking the movies:

5 Least Favorites

I didn’t “hate” all of these, but there were some ‘duds’.
5. Room 203 – it was ok; fewer scares than it seemed it would have
4. Shivers – like I said in Part 1, I’m not going out of my way to watch this movie again
3. Altered States – even stranger than “Shivers” but half as scary and maybe 3/4 as good
2. The Houses October Built – over hyped, weaker version of “Hell House”
1. Angels Fallen – the parts that I watched were ‘Bottom 10 Ever Watched’ bad

This was hard to narrow down:
Honorable Mention: “Daybreakers” – a good twist on vampire-human lore
5. ‘Marvel Zombies’ – it’s terrifying how strong some Marvel characters are as zombies….
4. The Curse of La Llorana – When someone tells you not to open a WARDED, LOCKED door, DON’T OPEN IT!
3. Weapons – while not a scary as other movies, this arguably was one of the 3 best-made movies
2. The Call – Will recommend this movie to anyone that is a horror or thriller fan
1. Evil Dead Rise – equaled the gore, exceeded the hype
