Spooky Movie Month, Pt. 2: October 1-10

In this post, I talked about movies that I might watch during October. Here are the first batch of movies (with few, if any, spoilers):

October 1st: “Deadtime Stories” (1986). A more-than-normally-perverted guy is trying to watch ‘adult material’, when his nephew (upstairs) calls for him to tell him a bedtime story. The uncle tells 3 stories:
– A story about witch sisters, and their young man apprentice/slave/prisoner(?), trying to collect ingredients for a spell to resurrect their sister. The young man doesn’t want to hurt or kill anyone to get said ingredients; the sisters have no problems doing it. A young woman is spied in the woods, and decisions were made.
– A version of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, where ‘Red’ lives with her Grandma. Red goes to pick up some medicine, is handed the wrong order, and ‘the Wolf’ makes an appearance. A nice twist to the story.
– A version of ‘Goldilocks and the Three bears’, where “Goldie Locks” is a telekinetic, very insane, serial killer that is living in the abandoned house of the Bear family. A lot of slapstick character names and comedy, sprinkled with a little bit of horror.
Overall, not a bad movie. There is a very loose thread that ties in the 3 stories. Don’t watch it, expecting an Oscar-worthy movie, though.

October 2nd: ‘Marvel Zombies’ (2025). My description from FB:
“I didn’t realize that this series was a sequel to an episode of “Marvel’s ‘What If…?'”. Zombies are bad enough. Now have zombies with the superpowers of top-tier Marvel villains AND heroes…! 4 episodes, about 30-35 minutes, each. 3 of the 4 were ultra-violent; all of them had zombie horror in them. Thumbs up!”

October 3rd: “Near Dark” (1987). I had heard of this movie for decades. This is a ‘Vampire Western’ – a guy in Oklahoma gets bitten by a beautiful woman he saw outside of a bar. He is kidnapped by her family (with 3 cast members from the movie Aliens!), while his own family searches for him. He also does not want to kill people and drink their blood, which is the main conflict of the movie.
I liked this movie but I may have to re-watch it soon; it feels like I missed parts of it. I do remember that Bill Paxton is absolutely out of his mind in this lol.

October 4th: Did not watch anything

October 5th: “The Sudbury Devil” (2023). In Puritan New England, an investigator and a priest join a minister to investigate weird happenings in Sudbury, MA. Weird things do happen.
The script is mainly in Early Modern English – not the easiest to follow, but definitely adds to the overall creepy atmosphere. This movie is not for the squeamish or easily offended by religious matters: there is a LOT of graphic violence, a rape scene (made weirder by possible double possession?), and an ending scene that ranks near the top of disturbing ways to end a movie. Even with all of that, I was pleasantly surprised by the movie.

October 6th: “Room 203” (2022). Two friends move into an apartment, in an old building, with a stereotypical creepy landlord. The apartment has a mysterious hole in a wall; weird, spooky stuff starts happening when that hole is tampered with. There was a small twist with the landlord. If there ever was the definition of a ‘meh’ movie, this was it: nothing was really bad, but nothing stuck out as truly scary or spooky, other than the final 15 minutes (and that is stretching it). On a 1-10 scale (with ’10’ being the best), I’ve give it a 5 for scariness, a 6 for the ending, and a 5 for the overall movie.

October 7th: “They Came From Within (U.S.)”/”Shivers” (Canada) (1975). A man-made parasite turns a Montreal apartment complex into horny zombies or violent zombies. The ‘horny’ zombies aren’t really horny (until the end); the ‘violent’ zombies mainly want to fight you, not necessarily kill you. For a movie made in the 1970s, this wasn’t bad. There were some gruesome scenes, involving the parasites. I won’t add this to a “Must-Watch Horror Movies” list but, if someone was playing it at a party, I’d probably sit down and watch again.

October 8th: “Daybreakers” (2010). In 2019, a plague has turned most of the Earth’s population into Vampires; Vampires are now finding their “food supply” (Humans) critically low, as Humans have gone into hiding. One company is working on creating Synthetic Blood (for various reasons), while a group of Humans and a Vampire scientist look for other solutions. By FAR, this was the best movie of this first section of movies! I liked the take on Vampire vs. Human lore, including showing how even Vampires are struggling (and mutating!) with the blood shortages in different ways. And don’t get it wrong: there are a lot of good, horror, vampire-related moments in this movie; however, it could also be classified as ‘Action/Horror’. Definitely enjoyed it!

October 9th: “The Curse of La Llorona” (2019). This was the scariest movie I’ve watched so far, and the second-best movie, next to “Daybreakers”. The legend of the Hispanic vengeful ghost hits in Los Angeles, when a case worker tries to protect her children from La Llorona. A 2nd mother is also involved, as she lost her boys to La Llorona, via decisions made by said case worker. It had a similar, but not as intense, vibe as The Conjuring (which it is very loosely tied into that universe). I would definitely re-watch this one.

October 10th: Did not watch anything – was mentally exhausted.

I mainly use Tubi, YouTube (especially if I rent the movie), and (if I can find a good version) Daily Motion for movie-watching. If I am at someone’s house, later in the month, and they are watching horror movies, I’ll also use those viewings. Next post will be on the 21st!
