‘Night Walks’: Some Odds and Ends

I have been on a “Boom Bap” music kick, lately. YouTube has at least 9 volumes of music entitled “Return of the Boom Bap”. It’s simple beats with drums and cymbals (usually on a drum machine), with samples from other, older songs. These tracks are mostly instrumentals, with a late-1990s/early-2000s vibe. I’ve had them playing in an ear bud at work – it helps make the day go by easier and faster.

Speaking of work. I am taking a longer-than-normal vacation, sooner than normal. I like to take or 4 days off in late August, before the back-to-school traffic really gets going, sometimes to go watch the NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis (on Labor Day weekend). However, the lack of money for that trip, plus the increasing exhaustion and pain in my feet, hands, wrists, and leg, pushed that vacation to 11 days and the start time to July 30th. I don’t have many plans for vacation – maybe a Team Trivia trip on 7/30 or August 6th, plus a D&D session on August 9th, so far – but I am hoping for a good mix of recovery, relaxation, and out-of-the-apartment fun with friends. We shall see what we shall see! 😉

I listened to the Stephen King novel, The Long Walk, for the first time. I’ve seen this book in different libraries for years but always skipped it, for some reason. I really enjoyed the book! It was incredibly tense, especially for a story that’s mainly about a walk of survival. The main plot: 100 boys, in a dystopian future, participate in a Reality TV game show (this book was written in 1979) called “The Long Walk”. They walk until only 1 is left; the winner gets any wish they want, for the rest of their life. The problems: a) You must maintain a walking speed of at least 4 miles per hour, while constantly monitored by soldiers; if you drop under that pace, you are Warned – you have 30 seconds to get back up to speed
b) After your 3rd Warning, you have 30 seconds – if you don’t reach the speed, you are shot dead. No exceptions. To clear a Warning, you have to maintain the correct speed for 1 continuous hour.
c) You cannot receive any aid from onlookers: food, water, shoes, medicine, etc. If you try to run into the crowd (or run off the given path), you are shot.
I highly recommend the audio book! If you enjoy Stephen King’s works, I think you’ll like it.

A little bit ‘TMI’ but a good, long make out session with a lady would be nice. Nothing more than that – no hidden meanings, no strings attached.

I liked the tweaked baseball All-Star Home Run Derby and game! The opening rounds of the HR Derby, the top 4 batters (regardless of what side of the bracket they are on) advance to the semi-finals; then, the batters are reseeded. Also, the Finals had only 2 minutes for each batter, speeding up the process. The All-Star Game, if it ends in a tie (which it did this year), now goes to a 3-batter, 3-swings-per-batter “Derby”. It added some needed excitement to the end of games. keep this format, MLB!

My little brother’s birthday was on 7/15.
My birthday is 7/29.
One of my 2 best female friends’ birthday is 8/5.
My other best female friends’ birthday is 8/12. (same year as 8/5 friend)
I like how we all fall exactly a week or 2 between each other.

First, the laundromat on the University of Louisville’s campus closed in February, the best one that was within a close distance to my apartment. Now, the Kroger store that was 2 blocks away is closing, on the 31st of July. I do have a much larger Kroger about 3/4 mile away that I can walk to but for my Dad (who lives close by but isn’t able to make that walk), it is a problem. Thankfully, my brothers can take him to that Kroger when needed.

Unless the timing lines up, I don’t think I can do the UofL Alumni Band at Homecoming, this year. I have a wedding of two good friends on the same day, but neither have announced a time. The only way I can see doing both is if:
1) The wedding is first and it starts before 3 PM
2) I can get a ride to/from the venue (in Shelbyville, KY – about 30 minutes from Louisville)
3) The Homecoming game doesn’t start before 7:30 PM (the Alumni practice would start around 3 PM, which I might be able to skip)
If the game is first (starting before 1 PM) and the wedding starts after 7 PM, then that could work, although that might mean a very long Saturday. Still have plenty of time to see how things play out; I’m not missing that wedding unless I can’t get a ride to Shelbyville (nope, car is still out of commission).
